Hubble's Hubble Ultra Deep Field (HUDF) Unveils Earliest Galaxies

"Shortly after the big bang, the first stars reheated the cold, dark universe..."

Astronomers at the Space Telescope Science Institute recently unveiled the spectacular images from the deepest part of the visible universe. These images give us the clearest picture to the present time of the very origin of the universe. We are seeing photographic images from the first galaxies to emerge from the time sometimes called the "dark ages." This is the time shortly after the big bang when the first stars were born.

The Hubble Ultra Deep Field (HUDF) is a million-second-long exposure, actually a composite of two separate images taken by Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) and the Near Infrared Camera and Multi-object Spectrometer (NICMOS).

This beautiful 36"x24" print shows the Hubble Ultra Deep Field with caption and two close-up views. Printed on high-quality gloss photographic stock and suitable for framing, this incredible print makes a great gift!

These images reveal galaxies never before seen by ground-based telescopes, or even in the previous Hubble far away images called the Hubble Deep Fields (HDFs), taken in 1995 and 1998.

These remarkable images will be used to search for galaxies that existed between 400 and 800 million years after the big bang. The HUDF field contains an estimated 10,000 galaxies. The final ACS image, assembled by Anton Koekemoer of the Space Telescope Science Institute, shows a wide array of unusual galactic images that seem quite different from the spiral and elliptical galaxies we see today. We are seeing the chaotic beginnings of the universe!
