Who is Len Green?

Here at Pharos Games we had the great fortune of finding a wonderful beta tester, who is well-known and respected in the gaming community -- Len Green, B.Sc (Spec. Hons. Phys.) A.R.C.S.)

Len was born on January 26, 1925. He is a retired teacher, who was born and educated in England, as were both his parents, and has lived in Israel since 1949. At Haifa, Israel, he taught Physics in Hebrew for 40 years. Len was employed by UNESCO in Africa, as an expert in Physics education from 1963 to1967. He spent 2 years in Liberia and 2 years in Nigeria.

Len is currently 79 years old. His wife Sylvia (whom he married in England 55 years ago ... cradle-snatching, as he says) is exactly 5 years younger! Len and Sylvia have 3 children and 11 grandchildren. This photo shows Len and Sylvia, with youngest daughter Dana and two of her three children (Tamar & Carmel).

Len says he is completely addicted to computers, and particularly computer games -- almost exclusively Quest/Adventures. Some of his articles and ‘Machine-Code’ & ‘Assembler’ programs of primitive computer games were published at the very beginning of the 1980’s in a USA magazine called “Micro” which was published in Chelmsford MA.

Over the past three years, Len volunteered to correct the English subtitles of two Israeli made “International”-games, i.e. Master Of Dimensions and Armed & Delirious (Dementia) and his name appears in the credits of the latter. He also wrote two great Walkthrus for Armed & Delirious which are posted on several well known Internet Games Sites -- a ‘Bare Bones’ & a ‘Full’ walkthru.

Len has played a large number of the Quest/Adventure computer games that were sold during the second half of the 90’s, and quite a few that were released during the first half.

Len has written three UHS (Universal Hint System) Files: first Fable, then Blue Force, and then Armed & Delirious (Dementia). He has also posted a few ‘mini-walkthrus’ on the internet (e.g.:- Supplementary Hints on The Neverhood and on Riven).

Len made some corrections and additions to Jim Blanchard’s excellent walkthru on Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine, which Jim incorporated and acknowledged.

Len wrote reviews which have been posted on Quandaryland :- Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine, Broken Sword Duo Revisited, Cracking the Conspiracy, and The Longest Journey. He posted a walkthru for an older game: Dark Seed II.

Len was part of the beta-testing team for “Prelusion’s” Gilbert Goodmate and the Mushroom of Phungoria. He discovered some bugs in the process, which were absolute show-stoppers. Len also assisted with some advisory work on some technical glitches, and Prelusion included his name in their Credits. Len wrote a preview of the game for “Quandaryland”, and then a comprehensive “Double-Walkthru” which has been posted on several prestigious Quest/Adventure Web Sites and also composed a UHS-File on this game.

In the early part of 2001, Len did a rather unique sort of beta testing. The foremost developers and publishers of computer games in Israel (“Hed-Arzi Multimedia”) translated the English version of Rome: Caesar's Will (with permission from the French “Montparnasse Multimedia,” who produced the game). Unfortunately it was impossible to finish the translated version. Close to the end, every computer crashed every time. The developers turned to Len to find out why. Len had to play both the English and translated versions right through to the very end many times to investigate the problem. Len managed to sort it all out, even though there was no walkthrough, in only a few days. The game was corrected and distributed in Israel with his name in the Credits of the local version.

In 2002, Len wrote a comprehensive walkthru and did some checking of Pleurghburg: Dark Ages (“GASPOP … Chrille Blomqvist”). He was also one of the 8 beta testers of Calsoon-2 (“GASPOP … Chrille Blomqvist”) … and his name appears in the Credits. Len also wrote the walkthru for Calsoon-2.

As a beta-tester for “Legacy Interactive’s” Law & Order: Dead on the Money in the fall of 2002, Len uncovered around 35 bugs --some being game-stoppers. Len also wrote a comprehensive walkthru of Law & Order: Dead on the Money, and was a beta tester for a demo version of a new GASPOP game called Revenants. His main contribution was correction of English texts.

In early 2003, Len posted (on some walkthru Sites) “Tierra’s King’s Quest 2 ~ VGA … Full Points List & Supplementary Hints”. He was a beta tester for a demo version of a new GASPOP game called Revenants, and one of the 8 beta testers of a revised version of Calsoon-2 including full speech, for which his name appeared in the Credits.

In the spring of 2003, Len served as lead tester of The Uncertainty Machine, The Adventures of Fatman, and our own SerpentHead Revisited game. Len wrote and posted a full walkthru of SerpentHead Revisited for the demo and full-game. He also wrote the walkthru for Fatman.

Later in 2003, Len wrote and posted a walkthru for the freeware game Mourir en Mer (To die at sea).

Len received a request from “Adventure Gamer/Dreamcatcher-Europe” with a request to allow them to edit & translate his walkthrough of Law & Order 1: Dead on the Money into French, German, & Italian and bundle with the game to be distributed world wide except North America. Len agreed, and edited the final English version.

Other 2003 beta-testing included the freeware game Other Worlds and Law & Order 2: Double or Nothing.

Len wrote a walkthrough for Runaway: A Road adventure, the French and German dubbed and subtitled Law & Order-1 just released in Europe with his walkthrough, translated into French and German, packaged inside as a separate nicely printed 22 page booklet. “Author: Leonard Green”.

Len wrote an extremely detailed walkthrough for Law & Order 2: Double or Nothing, and did more work on the beta-testing of the later chapters of the freeware game Other Worlds and its comprehensive manual.

Then - Cherokee Trails 2 !! When we were approached by Scholastic Inc, we wanted to have the best beta tester we knew on our team. Happily for us, Len was available, and during the course of testing Len discovered many problems, large and small, that could have been the games's undoing!

Many thanks to Len Green for the incredible job he does, and the fantastic service he provides to all of us in the adventure game community!
